Growing up I did not play soccer, so when my daughter began to play competitive soccer, my learning curve was high. If you ask my daughter today, she would say I am still fairly clueless about the sport. That being said, I know more today than I knew several years ago.
I remember the very first time I saw a player pass the ball back to the goalie. I flipped out. What in the world? Why would the player do that? To my ignorant self that seemed stupid. Now I know that passing the ball back to the goalie is a very important play in “real soccer”. It relieves pressure and opens up the field.
My clueless soccer self fell into the trap of thinking that soccer was all about attack, attack, attack. Yes, the goal is to score and that does require players to attack, but players must be strategic in their play. They must use the entire field. They must play smart. They must work together.
This morning I’m realizing that in my life it is easy to make the rookie mistake of attack, attack, attack. It is easy to get so tangled up in fighting the opponents of the day that I forget about the One who has my back.
How do I relieve the pressure in my life? I need to pass the ball back to God, my goalie who sees the field clearly (and no… the Bible does not say that God is a goalie..just the meandering thoughts of a soccer saturated soccer mom). God is the last line of defense in my life and the first line of attack on whatever problem I am facing.
How do we pass the ball back to God? We fight for the time to listen to God, to be alone with Him. We do that by reading His word (the play book for life) and talking with Him. (thanks to my pastor for this reminder this past week). Sometimes the best thing we can do is to slow down and create some space in our life.
Are you feeling pressured right now in your life? Pass the ball back to God!
Psalm 55:16-18, 22 – But I call to God and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon, I cry out in distress and He hears my voice. He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me….Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.
